Acqui Terme

Acqui Terme is a small spa town in the Bormida valley. The town was a favourite of the ancient Romans thanks to its sulphurous bromide-rich waters, which were used to cure gout and rheumatism.

Four arches still remain of the aqueduct that was built to bring fresh water from the mountains to the town to be mixed with the hot thermal waters. The spa now includes a wellness centre and beauty farm.

The Romanesque Duomo S. Maria Assunta attracts many visitors who want to see its large and extensive crypts. Those who want to learn more about the history of Acqui Terme should not miss the Museo Civico Archeologico, which is located in the Castello di Paleologhi (Wed-Sat 09.30 – 12.30, 15.30 – 18.30, Sun 15.30 – 18.30).

The town's emblem is the marble-encased La Bollente hot spring dating back to 1870. As the name suggests, it is a source of very hot water (approx. 75 °C) that is supposed to help those with breathing problems.

Alongside its fame as a spa resort, Acqui Terme is also well-known for another speciality, this time of the gastronomic variety - Brachetto d’Acqui. This is a ruby-coloured dessert wine that you really should not miss!
