Saluzzo

Saluzza is known for its master restorers and carpenters who make reproduction Piedmontese furniture. Saluzza lies among the pyramid-like foothills of the Monviso massif and is also one of the most beautiful spots in Piedmont. The higher part of the town can be reached through the Porta Maria and retains its mediaeval character to this day. A colourful farmers' market is held here every Saturday and Wednesday morning. If you climb up the salita to the Castello, you can admire some wonderful and well-preserved Palazzi.

The Castello lies right at the top and was used from 1821-1992 as a prison. It is currently being transformed into a cultural centre. From the Torre Civica (daily March-Sept. Thu-Sun 09.30 – 12.30, 14.30 – 18.30, otherwise only Sat/Sun) there is a wonderful view across the valley as far as the Alps.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (daily. 09.00 – 12.00, 15.00 – 18.00) in Piazza Risorgimento was one of the last churches in Piedmont to be built in the Gothic period. The design of the interior reflects French influence.

The church of San Giovanni lies in Via San Giovanni. It houses the sarcophagus of Ludovico II and the tomb of Galeazzo Cavassa. His former house, the Casa Cavassa (Apr.-Sept. Tue-Sun 10.00 – 13.00, 14.00 – 18.00, otherwise only up to 17.00, www.casacavassa.it) is one of the most beautiful patrician palaces in Piedmont. Today it is home to the Museo Civico (local history museum).
