Shortly before the french border, just below the town of Grimaldi, you will find one of the most important excavation sites in Europe, the grottos of Balzi Rossi. The up to 2000 year old skeletons and artifacts lead to a spectacular discovery. Two skeletons from the “Grotta die Fanciulli“ exhibit distinct negroid features and thus vary greatly from the up until then only known Crô-Magnon-Type. Due to this discovery we can say with great certainty that there were multiple species of humans that must have died out in Europe.
A part of the excavation is available to see in the Museo Nazionale Preistorico dei Balzi Rossi which was founded by Thomas Hanbury in 1898. Included in the price (2 € for adults and 1 € for children/students) is a visit into the grottos. From the entrance to the grottos is a wonderful view of the French border town of Menton.
